Chaplain Moertle's value as a police chaplain is difficult to quantify with statistics.  I view his value as a chaplain from two distinct views.  The first is from that of a traditional police chaplain role.  By that I mean being called by officers to a scene for the public.  I have witnessed Chaplain Moertle minister to a father who lost his infant son.  Chaplain Moertle did not know this family initially dealing with such a tragedy.  Before we left the home, this young father was hugging Chaplain Moertle and with no doubt in mind brought him comfort and peace of mind.  The genuine care and concern expressed by Chaplain Moertle toward this family can best be experienced and not in written words.

The second view in which I see Chaplain Moertle is his dedication to take care of us in public safety.  I cannot envision any more difficult a group to serve than public safety for a chaplain .  We see the worst sides of mankind, people experiencing their worst days, while we are called upon to bring calmness and order to chaos.  Those of us serving in public safety have to develop coping mechanisms that sometimes serve as obstacles when trying to live a normal life.  Chaplain Moertle's devotion to those of us who serve has been to take care of us so we can take care of the community.  The always present and willingness to listen makes Chaplain Moertle invaluable to this agency.

Try to speak about someone in a paragraph that deserves a book. Bob has been called to serve and he answered the call. I have had the pleasure of being one of Bob's mentors and someone he has served and ministered to as well. Bob fits all the criteria of what it means to be a Chaplain. Bob is present, Bob listens, Bob acts, Bob is professional, Bob is a servant. Being a professional Chaplain myself and a former Police Officer, Bob is of a tremendous value to our first responders be it emotionally or spiritually.

Bob cares for the emotional and spiritual well being of all the officers he comes in contact with. He is never pushy, nor does he overly proselytize or try to make you believe a certain way. What is special about Bob to many of us is he is always there for the officers, and on his own time.

With Bob’s background of serving people, seminary, serving with hospice and other ministry organizations, any agency with Bob is a better agency!

Chaplain Moertle always had a calm and happy demeanor and was always easy to talk to and share experiences with. I never felt any pressure, religious or otherwise, about my views or feelings while sharing any experiences with Bob. I know from my interactions with Bob that he is service oriented, dependable, and trustworthy. This outlet was extraordinarily important to me.

Bob always had a genuine concern for my spiritual and emotional wellbeing. He always asked about how my family was doing. This sense was shared by many of my coworkers on my shift. During our conversations he shared a challenge coin with me.
